The 2nd Street Improvement Project extends from Market Street to King Street, stretching from downtown San Francisco to the SOMA district. The community, through the recently adopted East SOMA Area Plan, identified 2nd Street as a primary pedestrian, bicycle and transit thoroughfare and a ‘green connector’ for the neighborhood. This project will work towards implementing that vision by transforming 2nd Street into a pleasant multi-modal corridor that improves safety and access for pedestrians, bicyclists and transit as well as drivers.
The project, located on Second Street between Market and King streets, will include: widened sidewalks between Harrison and Townsend streets; one-way cycle track bicycle facilities in the northbound and southbound directions; transit boarding islands at most transit stops along with planted medians; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps; new street trees; site furnishings (trash receptacles, bike racks, benches, and pedestrian lighting); upgrades to the traffic signal system; and a repaved street, curb-to-curb. In order to achieve a complete street along the corridor, the travel lanes along Second Street would generally be reduced from two in each direction to one in each direction. We expect the project to begin construction in November 2017.
