Two canopies will be constructed directly over Bay Area Rapid Transit station entrances at 5th and Market Street and New Montgomery and Market Street near the Palace Hotel.
In January, prior to the start of canopy construction on the street level, the contractor will build work enclosures around the two BART entrances listed above, closing off all public access at these station entrances for approximately 6 months until canopy construction has been completed.
Construction hours during the weekdays will be from 7am to 7pm. There may be the need for occasional weeknight work from 8pm to 5am, but no weekend work is planned.
Over the next 5-6 years BART will construct 17 other canopies on Market Street over downtown station entrances. As part of a separate project, new escalators will be installed at each of these locations following the canopy construction. New canopies will protect new escalator equipment, protect employees who open and close the station, and reduce station maintenance costs. The new canopies will also provide additional wayfinding, lighting, real time information and security cameras on Market Street.
